Intern for Custom Cattle Care Management |
POSITION DESCRIPTION |
With a surplus of corn residue in the eastern third of Nebraska and a shortage of good feed resources common in at least part of the country each year, an opportunity exists for young people to get into the beef business is by doing winter cow care. Developing trust and good relationships are keys to success and a well-documented plan is an important aspect of doing it.
This internship will support work CAP does with the UNL Beef Extension team to develop opportunities for young people to become involved in the beef industry. The intern will help research and develop business management educational and ancillary materials to support a custom cattle care enterprise. Outcomes may include:
- Enterprise budgeting and cash flow templates and educational examples for a custom cow care business.
- A cattle care agreement template and supporting educational materials.
- Lease agreement templates and supporting educational materials for acquiring access to and utilizing grazing resources.
- Educational materials to support development of cattle health and nutrition plans.

The opportunity is available for the 2023-2024 academic year. The position includes opportunities for potential transition to a 2024 summer research project. The expectation is that materials are complete by the start of the 2024 Fall semester and require approximately 300 hours of development time. |
STUDENT QUALIFICATIONS |
Open to any undergraduate student Sophomore year or above that has completed AECN 201 Farm and Ranch Management. |
