For cattle producers, understanding the full cost of production — not just out-of-pocket expenses — is essential for evaluating profitability, marketing decisions, and herd management strategies.

The Center for Agricultural Profitability and Nebraska Extension have created these sample budgets using CAP’s Agricultural Budget Calculator to be representative of typical herd size and practices by region of the state. They are intended to serve as guides that are customized by each producer using current local prices and their own production assumptions and individual management practices.

Individuals can utilize the Agricultural Budget Calculator (ABC) program by creating a user account (agbudget.unl.edu). Nebraska cattle and crop budgets are available in the program and may be downloaded by users to modify to mirror their own enterprise budgets. Users may also use the ABC program and create their own enterprise budgets without the use of the Nebraska budgets.
