Renewable diesel and biodiesel continue to reshape demand for soybean oil, with implications that reach back to farm-level marketing and production decisions. The Center for Agricultural Profitability at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will present a webinar on March 5 at noon Central Time to examine how the biomass-based diesel market is evolving and what it means for Nebraska producers.

The webinar, "Understanding the Biomass-Based Diesel Market," will feature Scott Gerlt, chief economist with the American Soybean Association. He will explain how biodiesel and renewable diesel are produced, how the markets function and how federal and state policies influence demand.

Brad Lubben, ag policy specialist with Nebraska Extension, will host the webinar.

Renewable diesel production has expanded quickly, creating new demand for soybean oil and influencing crush margins and price relationships. Gerlt will help connect those industry trends to farm-level decisions, outlining how policy incentives and low-carbon fuel standards translate back to soybean markets and producer profitability.

Gerlt leads market and policy analysis for the American Soybean Association, where he helps guide strategic decisions for the organization and its members. Before joining ASA in 2020, he led U.S. crop policy and analysis work at the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute at the University of Missouri. He regularly presents and writes on issues affecting soybean producers and agricultural markets.
